Relax by the waters of Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Huanghuacheng Great Wall (黄花城长城), also known as the Lakeside Great Wall (水长城), is a section that can be visited directly north of Beijing in Huairou District. It is one of the lesser-known sections of the Great Wall to visit, meaning fewer crowds. The views of the Great Wall may not be as spectacular as some other sections such as Badaling or Mutianyu, but the easier paths, as well as beautiful water views provide a relaxing day out.

All the facilities needed for a day out are available on sites. Numerous shops, restaurants, and hotels line the streets up to the main entrance and ticket office. There are also small stands on the side of the road, with fruit, souvenirs, and barbeque for sale. Many restaurants are still open after dark each having different levels of quality and pricing.

On entering the main gate into Huanghuacheng Great Wall, one is greeted by the view of a dam intersecting two sections of the Great Wall. The dam is an attraction in itself, and it is possible to walk behind the cascading water during the day. In the evening, the gates permitting entry into this area are locked. The section of the Great Wall that can be viewed first is old and dilapidated with plants growing out from the brick surfaces.

Entrance to the Lakeside Great Wall

There are many options for how visitors would like to view the Great Wall here. One can walk over the restored sections of the Great Wall. There is also a longer route around the north side of the lake. For those who want to view the Great Wall but do less climbing, a boat ride can be taken across the lake. This does provide many options for visitors with different requirements, as well as levels of fitness.

Walking along the main section of the Great Wall on the south side of the reservoir, the restored sections may not be what all people are looking for. From observation, it can be seen that these sections are in fact where the original walls were constructed. There are also watch towers that remain in their original state.
