Marathon Training at the Beijing Olympic Forest Park

Recommended for:

Expansive! The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is suitable for people who love running, or people wanting to spend a long day relaxing.

This is one of the best parks in Beijing for running. All the main paths have running tracks next to the concrete or paving. They are slightly spongy and comfortable to walk or run on. Paths with a red line (see map below) show the main running routes. These are also very safe in the evening due to the number of people using and exercising this main track. For people staying long-term in Beijing, there are running groups that can be joined in the evenings and weekends.

For those who are less inclined to run, there are multiple options to get around the park. Set aside about three hours for this excursion to walk around both the north and south sections of the park. There are also multiple paths to explore, with bridges connecting small man-made islands. If walking this far is too difficult, take the tourist car, or hire a bicycle.

Things to do:

Entering from the south side of the park, one is greeted by Lake Aohai. This is filled with bird life, and carp swimming in the water. There are two restaurants including the Nanmen Hotpot, authentic Beijing style. There is also a small outdoor cafe and playgrounds for children. Furthermore, there are multiple locations where there are boats that can be hired to row on the lake.

What to see:

Overall, the Olympic Forest Park has been well maintained. Walking around Aohai, there are many points where the Olympic Tower can be seen. It is striking both at day and night. The lakes are also well designed with bridges, and lotuses in bloom in late summer, early autumn.

Verdict:

For those living in Beijing, this is a must for runners. The tracks, showers, and facilities are available for both professional and amateurs alike. For relaxation purposes, this is suitable for those who are spending a few weeks in Beijing. It would not be recommended for those trying to fit in the top sites in a few days.
